A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to keep. On your next visit, the browser hands it back, which is how a site can remember something about you — a language choice, a form session, whether you're logged in.
Cookies can't run programs, and they can't read files on your computer. Alongside them, sites sometimes use similar browser storage such as local storage; where we mention cookies below, we mean these technologies generally.
We're not trying to build a profile of you. The cookies on this website exist for three practical reasons: to keep pages working securely, to remember a preference you've set, and — where enabled — to understand in aggregate which pages people find useful so we can improve them.
